Among the range of Osprey daypacks, most of the bags below 40L (40 litres) will meet carry-on requirements – according to the brand. Backpacks and bags that will work as carry-on luggage include the Osprey Farpoint 40, Osprey Fairview 40, Osprey Farpoint Wheels 36, Osprey Transporter 40, Osprey Ozone 2 Wheel (40L) and Ozone 4 Wheel (38L) carry-on.

The Farpoint 40 is sized to meet most carry-on requirements, making it ideal for travelling without luggage that’ll need to be checked into an airline. A quick-access, zippered laptop/tablet sleeve protects devices up to 16-inch and an external toiletry pocket helps you breeze through security lines.

Just bear in mind that a 40L bag will max out carry-on dimensions on most airlines – but some stricter airlines, like RyanAir, may not allow a 40 litre backpack. If you fly with RyanAIr, Wizz Air or Norwegian frequently, a 30L backpack to be used as a carry-on will be a better choice.

Osprey Packs is an American company, founded in 1974 by Mike Pfotenhauer. Osprey is known for its high-quality outdoor backpacks. In 2021, the company was purchased by Helen of Troy Ltd.

Your backpack should be fitted tight enough for the backpack to fit closely to your body, a couple of inches below your shoulders. The backpack should rest evenly in the middle of your back and not sag down.

Firstly, you should pick a bag that’s the right size for you to comfortably carry, i.e. small, medium, large etc. Arguably the most important measurement for a backpack to fit properly is basing the size on your torso length rather than height.

To measure your torso, tilt your head forward and feel for the bony bump where the slope of your shoulders meets your neck. Place the measuring tape at the base of your neck and run it down your spine. Stop at the point where your spine meets your hips. If you’re unsure of your exact measurement, err on the side of caution and choose a size that is slightly larger than your actual measurement.

A backpack for a woman will generally be designed for narrower shoulders than men’s backpacks, so women’s packs are designed with varying padding thickness to create an anatomical fit for a woman’s neck, shoulder and chest. Similarly, women usually have shorter torsos than men so the pack length from shoulder to hip is made smaller.

When it comes to fitting a backpack, you should firstly read your pack’s manual on how to adjust it properly. Hip straps are a good place to start your adjustments. Make sure each end of the belt comes around the front of your hips, about two or three inches from the front of your hip bones. Next, adjust the torso to your torso measurements.

What you want to avoid is resting the pack’s weight on your shoulder straps. Follow the 80/20 principle: 80% of the weight should be on your hips and 20% on your shoulders. Your hips are where you carry your centre of gravity and most of your lifting power.

To adjust the shoulder straps, pull the straps forward away from your body and then down toward your hips to get a natural fit. Be careful not to overtighten. Ideally, there shouldn’t be any gaps between the shoulder strap and your back. If you do have a gap, most likely your torso setting is a little too long.

If your bag has load lifters, adjust them by pulling down on the tab until the straps make a 45-degree angle.
