Boots Opticians sells a range of glasses frames, ready reading glasses, prescription glasses, sunglasses etc for men and women. Boots Opticians also offers eye tests and a free contact lens trial.

Ready Reader glasses are off the shelf reading glasses, meaning they're ready-made, magnified, non-prescription reading glasses. They have 2 single vision lenses and come in all shapes, styles and sizes. If you're after cheap glasses, over-the-counter reading specs might fit the bill. But non-prescription glasses aren't specific to your individual eye's needs, though. So – while they probably won't harm your eyesight – you might find they give you headaches and eye strain if you use them too much.

Boots offers standard eye tests for £29.50, unless you're eligible for a free eye test on the NHS. For students, this generally applies to those aged under 16 or aged 16, 17 or 18 and in full-time education.

Before you get started with your free trial, you’ll need to pop into your local Boots Opticians for a 30-minute assessment. An optician will chat to you about prices and your lifestyle to find out which lenses best suit you. Then they’ll show you how to put in and take out your contact lenses and book you in for a post-trial appointment.

You can choose from either a month's supply of selected daily reusable lenses or up to five pairs of daily disposable lenses – all for free. Before you commit to buying them, take some time to see if contact lenses are right for you. If they are, Boots will help you choose a payment plan. Bear in mind that if you haven’t had an eye test in the last year, Boots will need to check your eyes before the trial.

There are three main types of contact lenses available from Boots Opticians:

• Daily disposable lenses – wear a fresh pair every day

• Daily reusable lenses – one pair can last up to one month

• Extended wear lenses – can be worn both day and night and can last up to one month

The contact lenses include:

• Lenses for astigmatism – to correct your prescription more accurately if you have astigmatism

• Multifocal/varifocal lenses – let you see near, far and in between

• Breathable lenses – allow more oxygen through to the eye

• Hydrating lenses – for long-lasting moisture and comfort

• Transitions lenses – adapt from clear to dark in line with changing light conditions

• Lenses with UV protection – help protect from sun damage

At Boots Opticians, an eye test costs £29.50. You're entitled to a free NHS eye test if you're under 16 years old or aged 60+. You're also eligible for a free eye test if you're 16, 17 or 18 and in full-time education.

An eye test at Boots, in total, takes around an hour and a half (1 hour 30 minutes). This is a general estimate, but it includes your pre-screening, eye test exam and shopping for your glasses or contact lenses. You only spend about 30 mins inside the consulting room with your optometrist where they’ll use a range of checks to look at various aspects of your eyesight.

They’ll establish how clearly you can see near and far and your ability to change focus. This tends to decrease with age and can often make your near vision blurry. They can also look for signs of conditions like cataracts.
